City Council Meetings on January 17 & 18, 2017

Dear Neighbors:

The City Council will be meeting twice this week, for a Council Retreat (which is open to the public) on Tuesday, January 17 at 6:00 PM in the Hydrangea Room, and then our regular weekly meeting on Wednesday, January 18 at 7:30 PM. After the Wednesday Council meeting we will meet in closed administrative session to discuss legal services (this was originally scheduled for last week, but postponed to this week).

The Tuesday night meeting will be our second of two retreats, with a focus on what our budget and other policy priorities should be for the coming year. I welcome suggestions and ideas from residents about policies or expenditures we should consider.

The Wednesday meeting has a relatively short agenda: an update on the Crossroads Farmers Market and a vote on a resolution authorizing funds for the City’s new Montgomery College scholarship program. The following is a link to the January 18 agenda: https://takomaparkmd.gov/meeting_agendas/city-council-meeting-wednesday-january-18-2017/

Montgomery College Scholarships.  https://documents.takomaparkmd.gov/government/city-council/agendas/2017/agenda-20170118-2rev.pdf.  In the City budget for the current year, the Council included $5,000 to establish a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to students attending Montgomery College. At last week’s Council meeting we gave preliminary approval to criteria for scholarship eligibility and to transferring the funds to the College to implement the program. This week we will be voting on a resolution to formalize those actions. As a strong supporter of MC’s mission of providing high quality, affordable educational opportunities to area residents, I’ll be voting in favor of the resolution.
